Opening of the modernized passenger route at the Uzhgorod – Vyšné Nemecké checkpoint.

Passenger traffic at the modernized checkpoint “Uzhgorod – Vyšné Nemecké” on the Slovakian border is resuming. After extensive reconstruction, customs and border control for citizens and vehicles, their clearance, and passage will be carried out in normal mode. The State Customs Service reminded that, in order to modernize the checkpoints on the passenger route of the “Uzhgorod-Automobile” customs post, modern modular structures for customs and border control, as well as sanitary modular facilities, began to be installed in March this year. Due to this, passenger vehicle traffic was temporarily redirected to the cargo direction.

Currently, in addition to the mentioned works, the customs office has organized new road surfaces with widened traffic lanes within a short time frame to increase the checkpoint’s throughput. This will allow the checkpoint to handle up to 1,000 vehicles per day, which is extremely necessary under current conditions. Also, on the passenger section, the canopy has been updated, lighting replaced, new markings applied, a new fence installed, and a number of other works carried out. Customs officials noted that they actively involve partners in the modernization of customs and border infrastructure and have been successfully implementing the USAID project “Economic Support for Ukraine” since 2023, which involves installing modular buildings at checkpoints. In particular, new mobile weighing complexes, modern lighting devices, modular structures for customs and border control, sanitary modular facilities, and updated road surfaces have been installed.

Overall, thanks to the agreements reached by the State Customs Service with representatives of the USAID project and the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, installation work on infrastructure updates and improvements for customs and border control has taken place at the customs posts of the Zakarpattia Customs Office in 2024.
